En route to a group that I was leading last night, I caught myself thinking about what I would say at the start of the group. How will I capture their attention? How can I make it different and maintain the same theme etc? The irony of the situation was that the group is all about presence. Getting out of the mind and into pure presence. Luckily, I remembered this and was able to bring awareness back into the being and out of the mind. Showing up fully at the start of the group with no idea what will come brings a unique atmosphere and it really encourages presence. How can I fully show up for whatever arises in each moment if I have a pre-conceived plan? What is arising in your being right now?
In the act of perceiving we merge with this body that knows more than we do.
Many of the high performers that I work with have achieved a great deal in life. Grand slams, World cup medals, multi-million pound businesses and at the same time, they often suffer a common niggling fear. When will I be found out? And I am realising right now that this fear was generating this mental preparation for me before the group last night. It doesn’t matter how high people soar in the world, the opposite polarity always seem to be present in the mind. How can a coach help with this common human frailty?
The most important role of a coach isn’t changing what people do in the world, but rather how they see the world. When people see the world differently, actions change on a deeper level. How people ‘see’ the world includes all of our perceptive channels. If, as Merleau-Ponty says, this body knows more than ‘we’ do, its time we pay more attention to it. The question, When will I be found out? lives in the ‘we’ section of human life. Identification with mind is the stumbling block. Life can only be known through the body. When fully in raw presence of the now, the polarities of the mind disintegrate.
The key to transformation is awareness. Helping people access deeper aspects of their experience is what I love. There is no effort to change anything. This invites resistance. Being there fully with whatever arises in every moment shines a flashlight on the very experience of life. And when this is known, everything changes. I love this work because it changes lives. Meeting people in this space of awareness changes my own presence and slowly, as Osho says, there is an opportunity to go beyond the mind.
When one watches the mind, slowly, slowly one goes beyond the mind. In very watching, the transcendence.
Curious things begin to happen when you become the watcher. What you believed you were, no longer remains possible. What you believed was impossible becomes possible and life begins to flow. This is true for the very best athletes in the world and its also true for the best entrepreneurs. The fear of being found out only exists in the mind. In the now of raw presence the stories of the mind no longer remain. All that remains is this very moment. Here now feeling life itself.
